Pentecost Sunday

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

Today is Pentecost Sunday; one of the prominent feasts in the Christian liturgical year. Pentecost is celebrated seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday. It is historically and symbolically related to the Jewish harvest festival of Shavuot, which commemorates God giving the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai fifty days after the Exodus. Among Christians, Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus as described in the New Testament Acts of the Apostles 2:1-31. For this reason, Pentecost is sometimes described as the "Birthday of the Church".

Today we also celebrate with our Music Director and Organist, Linda Bange, 15 years of Music Ministry at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. During our service today we will sing and hear some of Linda’s favorite hymns.

PRELUDE                                      “O Worship the King”

LIGHTING THE CANDLES

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

*CALL TO WORSHIP

God promised through a prophet long ago; I will pour out my spirit on all flesh.

Sons and daughters shall prophesy, the young see visions, the old dream dreams.

God’s spirit opens minds and hearts to make the commonplace exceptional.

We want to see, hear, and feel what the Holy Spirit has in store for us.

Come, Holy Spirit, to make all things new; light the flame of love in our lives. Amen.

*OPENING HYMN            “Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine”                UMH No. 606

OPENING PRAYER

Holy and loving God, confront us now with the wind and fire that transform life as we know it. We are amazed at what we do not understand and tempted to dismiss wonders beyond our experience. Break through our reserve to set us free. As we listen with expectancy, grant us courage to accept the challenges Christ presents to us this day and every day. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

       Pastoral Prayer

       The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.  Amen.

       *Prayer of Dedication

Loving God, we offer these gifts that they may empower today’s disciples, as the mighty wind and tongues of fire inspired and equipped the early apostles. As they gave their all to build your church, we rededicate our lives to making the church a vital force in today’s world. In Jesus’ name we offer this prayer. Amen.
