The earliest known burial at what is today the Ebenezer United Methodist Cemetery in Winfield, MD is that of John Gilliss, who was born in 1732 and died in 1806.  Because this and several of the earliest tombstones were placed before the church was located here (the original church, in the early 1800′s, was located near the intersection of Skidmore Road and Braddock Road, roughly one mile west of where the church sits today), it is possible that the cemetery was originally a family burying ground.
